A Simple Daily Skincare Routine: What to Use Morning & Night

Good skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. With so many serums, acids, masks, and trending ingredients available, it can be tempting to build a 10-step routine. But for most people, using a few well-chosen products consistently is more beneficial than constantly changing products or using too many active ingredients at once.

At Reviva Laser Skin Clinic, we believe a good daily routine should focus on four things:

Hydrate → Brighten → Protect → Renew

The exact products can then be adjusted according to your skin type and concerns, such as dryness, sensitivity, acne, pigmentation, melasma, or signs of aging.

☀️ Morning Skincare: Hydrate, Brighten & Protect

Your morning routine should prepare your skin for the day while protecting it from environmental and UV exposure.

Step 1: Gentle Cleanser

Start with a gentle cleanser to remove overnight oil, sweat, and skincare residue. Your skin should feel clean and comfortable—not tight or dry after cleansing. If you have very dry or sensitive skin, you may not need a strong morning cleanse. A very gentle cleanser or simple water rinse may be enough for some skin types.

Step 2: Niacinamide Mist for Hydration

After cleansing, apply a lightweight niacinamide mist or hydrating toner. Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, is commonly used in skincare to support the skin barrier, improve hydration, and promote a smoother, healthier-looking complexion. A hydrating mist can also be used throughout the day whenever your skin feels dry or tight.

Step 3: Vitamin C for Brightening

Vitamin C is one of our favourite ingredients for a morning routine. As an antioxidant, Vitamin C helps protect the skin from environmental stress while improving the appearance of dullness, uneven skin tone, and sun-related pigmentation.

For patients who are particularly concerned about pigmentation, we may recommend Vivier Radiance Serum, which combines Vitamin C with additional brightening ingredients, including arbutin and resorcinol. The right brightening product will depend on your skin type and the type of pigmentation you are treating.

Step 4: Moisturizer — If Your Skin Needs It

Not everyone needs a heavy moisturizer in the morning. If your skin already feels comfortable after applying your serum, a lightweight moisturizer may be enough. Some people may even be able to go directly to a moisturizing sunscreen. However, if your skin is dry, sensitive, or easily irritated, moisturizer is an important step for supporting the skin barrier.

Step 5: Sunscreen — Your Most Important Morning Step

If you are spending time and money improving pigmentation, acne marks, texture, fine lines, or other signs of aging, daily sunscreen is essential. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and use an adequate amount. Daily sun protection is especially important for anyone dealing with melasma, sun spots, acne marks, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Think of sunscreen as the step that helps protect the results of everything else you are doing for your skin.

💧 During the Day: Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Your skin may become dry throughout the day, especially if you spend long periods in air-conditioned, heated, or dry indoor environments. A niacinamide or hydrating mist can be reapplied whenever your skin feels dry or tight. Just remember that a facial mist does not replace sunscreen. Sunscreen should be reapplied when appropriate, particularly with prolonged outdoor or UV exposure.

🌙 Nighttime Skincare: Repair & Renew

Your nighttime routine is the time to cleanse away the day and introduce ingredients that support skin renewal.

Step 1: Cleanse

Remove sunscreen, makeup, excess oil, and environmental buildup before going to bed. A gentle cleanser is usually sufficient. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can unnecessarily irritate the skin barrier.

Step 2: Hydrate

Follow cleansing with your niacinamide mist or a gentle hydrating toner. This helps keep the skin comfortable and hydrated before applying your nighttime active ingredients.

Step 3: Retinol for Skin Renewal

Retinol is one of the most established ingredients used in skincare for improving the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Photoaging

  • Acne

  • Overall skin quality

But more retinol does not necessarily mean better results. If you're new to retinol, start slowly—approximately 2–3 nights per week—and gradually increase the frequency according to your skin's tolerance. If your skin becomes persistently dry, red, or irritated, reduce the frequency rather than trying to push through the irritation.

Step 4: Moisturize

Finish your nighttime routine with moisturizer.

This helps support the skin barrier and can reduce dryness associated with active ingredients such as retinol. For many people, nighttime skincare can be as simple as:

Cleanse → Hydrate → Retinol → Moisturize

✨ What If Pigmentation Is Your Main Concern?

Pigmentation often requires a more customized approach. If you experience melasma, sun spots, acne marks, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or uneven skin tone, your routine may benefit from additional brightening ingredients.

However, skincare is only one part of pigmentation management. Sun exposure, inflammation, acne, hormonal factors, and skin irritation can all influence pigmentation. That's why we generally approach pigmentation with three key elements:

Sun Protection + Appropriate Skincare + Professional Treatments When Needed

Most importantly, avoid adding multiple strong brightening or exfoliating products at once. Irritating your skin can sometimes make pigmentation more difficult to manage.

🤍 Don't Forget Your Skin Barrier

One of the most common skincare mistakes is assuming that every skin concern requires another active ingredient. Sometimes your skin simply needs a break. If your skin becomes unusually dry, sensitive, red, or irritated, consider simplifying your routine to:

Cleanse → Hydrate → Moisturize → Protect

Once your skin feels comfortable again, active ingredients can be gradually reintroduced as appropriate. A healthy skin barrier is the foundation of healthy-looking skin.

💧 DURING THE DAY

🌙 NIGHT

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Skincare Routine

Someone with dry and sensitive skin should not necessarily follow the same routine as someone with oily, acne-prone skin. Similarly, someone dealing with melasma or post-inflammatory pigmentation may need different products from someone primarily concerned about fine lines and skin aging.

The goal isn't to use the most products. The goal is to use the right products consistently. At Reviva Laser Skin Clinic, we can help you choose a skincare routine based on your individual skin type, concerns, treatments, and tolerance.

The Reviva Approach

Cleanse gently. Hydrate regularly. Brighten intelligently. Protect every day. Renew gradually.

Healthy-looking skin is built through consistency, not complexity.
